Oloyede Justifies Exclusion of Mathematics Credit Pass for Arts Students, Says It's to Prevent Forgery

By: Olufemi Orunsola

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has justified the exclusion of credit pass in Mathematics as a mandatory requirement for admission into arts and humanities programmes, noting that it is intended to curb result forgery among candidates.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that Prof. Oloyede made this position known in Ibadan on Sunday during the opening of the Jihad Week organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), University of Ibadan, and the launch of Ad-dhikr magazine.

The JAMB Registrar stressed that the move merely realigned the nation’s education policy with long-standing but neglected provisions.

He noted that many candidates had resorted to falsifying results or using fraudulent means in order to meet Mathematics requirements for courses where the subject is not directly relevant.

"How will you say somebody that wants to study Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or Arabic should not have university admission because of not having Mathematics, when such a person could go to the University of London to study Yoruba without Mathematics?”,he querried.

He further clarified that "What the Ministry of Education is doing is realigning the policy with the reality on ground, and it is in our interest not to encourage forgery."

Prof Oloyede noted that the policy had existed for years but had not been implemented until recently when the Ministry of Education approved its enforcement to reflect global academic standards and fairness to candidates.

He also commended the MSSN for its consistent role in promoting Islamic values and called on members to continue showcasing Islam’s beauty through peaceful coexistence and positive influence on campus and society at large.

He affirmed that "the MSSN has the capacity to invite people to see the beauty of Islam. The current MSSN must continue to build genuine and sincere relationships and lead by example."

The JAMB registrar took advantage of the ocassion to announce that, as part of the board's moves to ensure inclusivity, no fewer than 501 visually impaired candidates are profilrd yo participate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), as the board continues to enhance inclusivity in tertiary education admissions.
