Ogun Government Upgrades Sports Facilities Ahead of Gateway Games

Ahead of the National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games, Ogun State Government has commenced renovations on the MKO Abiola International Stadium, the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, and other sporting facilities within the state.

Ogun Government Upgrades Sports Facilities Ahead of Gateway Games

The Ogun State Government has begun renovations on the MKO Abiola International Stadium, the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, and other sporting facilities within the state in preparation for the 2024 National Sports Festival, also known as the "Gateway Games."

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that during an inspection tour of the facilities, the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, assured the public that the upgrades would be completed on schedule and the facilities would be ready for use before the games begin.

He further revealed that, at the moment the stadium’s pitch is being resurfaced, and that the tartan tracks are being removed, also the roofs of the Alake Sports Centre indoor hall are under repair. 

Furthermore, he added that, the VIP section of the stadium is being expanded, and new amenities like an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, and handball courts are being added.

Hon. Isiaka emphasized the Government's focus on boosting sports and youth development in the State by identifying and nurturing young talent. 

He stressed the importance of directing the energy and potential of Ogun State’s youth toward productive endeavors that benefit both their personal growth and the state’s socio-economic development.

The Commissioner reiterated that the National Sports Festival will serve as a platform to showcase the state's top athletes, promote Ogun's rich cultural heritage, and inspire the next generation of sports stars, pledging that outstanding performances during the festival would be rewarded.

In addition, the Commissioner also highlighted the significance of the extensive renovations, which are aimed at developing the skills of local athletes and demonstrating the State's commitment to successfully hosting a top-tier sports festival. 

Hon. Isiaka however, called on corporate organizations and individuals to support the Government in making the National Sports Festival a resounding success, noting that the event is an opportunity for Ogun State to showcase its talent, potential, and hospitality to the world.
