October 1: Again FG Cancels Independence Day Parade at Eagle Square Abuja

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Federal Government has cancelled the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on Wednesday, October 1.

OTN News further reports that the announcement was made in a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, and released earlier this week.

According to the statement, “the Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October.

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.

The government, however, expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the decision and called on Nigerians to continue supporting the reforms of President Bola Tinubu.

It also expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests.

OTN News observes that unlike what obtained in previous years, when the celebrations were held openly on the 11 hectares (27 acres) Eagle Square, Abuja, the current administration opted to host the event within the Villa in 2024, with this policy shift initially announced in October 2023 by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who explained that the low-key observance was due to the nation’s challenging economic situation.
