OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been plunged into mourning following the death of a 200-level medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, who reportedly took his own life after failing his examinations for the second time.

OTN News further reports as gathered that the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, confirmed that the 21-year-old, with matriculation number DEN/2021/023, was a student in the Faculty of Dentistry.

According to Olarewaju, results from the last semester’s examinations were released on Wednesday, indicating that Ibitayo would have to repeat Part Two for another academic year. He had already been repeating the same level from the previous session.

The university disclosed that Ibitayo, whose father is a medical doctor, allegedly ended his life by injecting himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State.

The tragic news has left his family, faculty members, classmates, and the entire OAU community in shock and sorrow.

Describing the incident as “heartbreaking,” Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, urged parents and guardians to teach their children and wards that setbacks, including academic failures, are not the end of life.

He, however, advised students to view failure as a stepping stone to future success rather than a final defeat, stressing the importance of resilience in the face of challenges.

Bamire prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved parents, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the entire university community, asking for strength to bear what he called an “irreparable loss.”
