Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina has made history as the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe competition held at Arena CDMX in Mexico City.
The event’s grand finale, which took place early Sunday morning, saw a nail-biting conclusion as Adetshina stood alongside Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, in a highly anticipated showdown for the coveted crown.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that Miss Denmark eventually claimed the title, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, Miss Universe 2023.
However, Adetshina's poise, intelligence, and elegance earned her overwhelming admiration from judges and spectators worldwide.
The competition, hailed as one of the most exciting in recent years, showcased the talents and beauty of women across the globe. Organizers shared the iconic moment via Instagram, writing, “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two remarkable women sharing one unforgettable moment.”
Adetshina’s journey to Miss Universe has been marked by resilience.
OTN News further reports that She previously faced backlash during her participation in the Miss South Africa 2024 contest due to her Nigerian heritage, prompting her withdrawal despite reaching the finals. Undeterred, she went on to represent Taraba State, winning Miss Universe Nigeria and earning her place on the global stage.
This achievement echoes the legacy of Agbani Darego, who became the first Black African to win Miss World in 2001.
Darego’s triumph, at just 18 years old, remains a milestone for Nigeria and the African continent, inspiring countless women.
Adetshina’s success at Miss Universe reinforces Nigeria’s reputation for producing extraordinary beauty queens and serves as a proud moment for the nation.
