OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that in a historic move, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved a massive 1,150 percent increase in the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, the first significant adjustment in nearly three decades.
OTN News further reports as gathered that the governor’s directive raised the monthly allowance from ₦4,000 to as high as ₦50,000, depending on the corps member’s area of deployment.
OTN News observes from the information gathered that under the new structure, all corps members posted to Abia will now receive a base monthly stipend of ₦20,000.
Those serving in state government establishments will receive an additional ₦10,000, while medical and teaching personnel will earn extra stipends of ₦30,000 and ₦10,000 respectively, to encourage participation in critical sectors.
OTN News further observes that, this comes in addition to the Federal Government’s new ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members, further boosting the overall welfare package for those serving in Abia.
Governor Otti described the decision as part of his administration’s vision to empower young Nigerians and strengthen the state’s workforce through targeted motivation and improved living conditions.
“We are determined to reward hard work and dedication. Our corps members are vital contributors to the rebuilding of Abia, and they deserve the best support,” he said.
The new policy also complements the government’s recent infrastructure upgrades at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area. The facilities have been renovated, with improvements in road networks, power supply, and accommodation for both staff and corps members.
According to the state government, the move signals a new era for corps members in Abia, one marked by welfare-driven reforms and genuine appreciation for their service to the state.
OTN News, however, observes that, observers have lauded Governor Otti for setting a new national standard in corps member welfare, noting that the increase not only boosts morale but also addresses long-standing neglect in sectors like education and healthcare.
