Students of tertiary Institutions in Nigeria who recently received a N20,000 stipend from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have begun celebrating the windfall described by many of them as a welcome development.

Many Nigerian students who benefited from the payment have shared their experiences on social media, with some of them explaining how they used the money for foodstuffs, while others expressed relief that it eased the financial burden on their parents.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered from authoritative source that, in total, 20,371 students from six tertiary institutions received the stipend for July.

The benefiting institutions include Bayero University, Kano Federal University, Dutsin-Ma; University of Ilorin; University of Benin, University of Ibadan, and University of Maiduguri.

While many students were grateful and excited, with plans to use the funds for transportation and other needs, others reported not receiving the payment.

However,NELFUND’s Director of Corporate Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, has revealed that some students were not yet to be verified and approved for the stipend.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) raised concerns over the selective disbursement, questioning why the funds were not distributed to all Universities at once and reiterating their opposition to the loan.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, stated the union's stance against the loan, while the Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Akinteye Babatunde, also acknowledged the loan's potential to alleviate financial pressure but stressed the importance of repayment to ensure continued support for future students.
