A 103-year-old Tanzanian woman, Mariam Hussein, recently shared her poignant love story with Afrimax’s English anchor, Simon Greenwood.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that speaking with Afrimax’s English anchor, Simon Greenwood in Swahili, Hussein recounted her enduring affection for a European boyfriend named John, whom she never saw again after he left Tanzania. Despite her conviction that he would return, Mariam remained single and celibate throughout her life.
"l met John, a young white man from Europe who had come to Tanzanian in search of adventure and purpose. I helped him navigate and settle comfortably into his new environment. Over time, our friendship blossomed into something more, to be honest, he was unlike anyone I have ever met his manners, stories, and kindness all fascinated me he respected my culture and showed genuine interest in my life and aspirations we spent countless hours envisioning a future filled with love and happiness. I believed he was truly unique and indeed he was." Hussein stated.
She described John as an adventurous and kind young man who had come to Tanzania seeking new experiences. Mariam fondly remembered how she helped him settle into his new surroundings, and their friendship soon blossomed into a deep romantic connection.
As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION Naija, Hussein said, she was captivated by his respect for her culture, his stories, his genuine interest in her life and his dreams. Together, we envisioned a future filled with love and happiness, but fate had other plans.
"Our relationship flourished, and I found myself falling deeply in love with John. Each moment we spent together intensified my feelings for him. His eyes sparkled with genuine affection, and his actions consistently showed his care and commitment. I loved him back wholeheartedly and unconditionally. For the first time in my life, I experienced love in its purest form. We shared dreams, hopes, and secrets, building an unbreakable bond. I hoped John would change my destiny, dreaming he might take me away from a life of struggle. With him, I envisioned a future full of endless possibilities, free from the hardships of my past. He gave me hope that together we could build a new life filled with love and happiness," Hussein recalled.
Mariam Hussein, who never married or had children, shared how her hopes were shattered when John abruptly left after receiving an urgent call to return to his village, without any farewell or explanation.
"I was devastated and initially couldn't believe he had disappeared. I thought it might be a prank or a test of my patience. I searched everywhere for John, desperately hoping for an explanation, but he was nowhere to be found. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and still there was no trace of him. Months turned into years, yet I clung to the belief that John would eventually return," she recounted.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija further reports that Hussein remained a virgin, adhering to her cultural expectation of preserving purity until marriage, as premarital sex was considered taboo.
"Despite the wonderful moments we shared, I refused to accept the idea that he might not come back anytime soon. I made it my priority to maintain my purity," she emphasized.
Hussein shared that she always believed she would eventually marry John and that her patience would be rewarded.
"This cultural belief was deeply ingrained in me, and I took my commitment seriously. Even though I loved John deeply and we had an incredible bond, I remained steadfast in upholding this cultural value," she explained.
"I believed that one day we would be married, and my patience would be rewarded. However, as the years went by, the hopes of his return began to fade, leaving me feeling both betrayed and alone. Nevertheless, I remained resolute in my promise to myself and my culture," Hussein added.
Reflecting on Mariam Hussein's love story, one cannot resist the urge to pray for her that her lover, John shows up one more time in Tanzania to fulfill her dreams and aspirations.
