MAPOLY Alumnus, Engr. Adeniyi Akanni Donates ₦1 Million Scholarship To Best Students In Memory of Late Mathematics Teacher

An alumnus of the 1982 graduating A Level class of the then Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), Engr. Chief Adeniyi Akanni, has made a significant contribution to his alma mater in memory of his former Mathematics teacher, Mr. Michael Oludare Mabadeje.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA OTN News reports that the with nostalgic reflections on his time at the Polytechnic, Engr. Akanni described Mr. Mabadeje as a dedicated and disciplined educator who had a profound impact on his students. 

He shared how the late teacher nurtured his love for mathematics and supported him during challenging times.

“He taught us Geometry, Algebra, and other branches of Mathematics with passion. He showed special interest in me and my academic progress. When I faced financial difficulties after gaining admission to the University of Lagos, he offered to sponsor my education. Although I didn’t take up the offer, his gesture inspired me throughout my journey,” Akanni recounted with nostalgia. 

To honour the late Mr. Mabadeje, Engr. Akanni instituted an award for the best students in Statistics and Mathematics, areas of the teacher’s expertise. 

OTN News further reports that during the award presentation, Akanni announced that he was inspired to donate an additional ₦1 million as a scholarship fund in memory of Mr. Mabadeje.

In his response to the give back gestures of the alumnus, the Rector, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Dr. Adeoye Odedeji, praised Engr. Akanni for his generosity and the tribute to his former teacher, describing it as a testament to the power of impactful teaching and humanity.

“The essence of life is not just its length but the positive impact we make. This gesture will inspire students and staff alike,” Dr. Odedeji remarked.

The award was presented to the best student in the Department of Statistics and Mathematics.

The beneciaries are: Anuoluwapo Michael Omosowon, who was visibly overwhelmed with joy could not hide his feelings as recounts how significant the scholarship is to him.

Omosowon, a part-time student, who made it known that he struggles to self-finances his education, expressed gratitude to God and the benefactor, noting that the recognition was both unexpected and deeply encouraging.

Speaking on behalf of the Department of Statistics and Mathematics, the Head of Department, Mr. Busuyi Ogunsanya, commended Engr. Akanni, emphasizing that the award will motivate students to strive for excellence and foster stronger relationships between lecturers and students.

The late Mr. Mabadeje, who passed away in 1998, was remembered fondly for his contributions to education. 

Engr. Akanni concluded by saying, “It is only fitting to reward excellence in the field he was so passionate about.”

The event was graced by the Deputy Rector, Dr. Mrs. Yetunde Lanre-Iyanda, and other top officials, including the Registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Elewodalu, the Polytechnic Librarian, Mrs. Basirat Akintunde and the Bursar, Mrs. Folasade Madariola.
