Lagos State has made history in Nigeria’s media sector with the launch of Wash 94.9 FM, the country’s first radio station dedicated solely to health and wellness.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that the launch event was attended by health professionals, media experts, Government officials, and other stakeholders, underscoring the broad ambitions of this unique venture.
This groundbreaking platform aims to reshape health communication by providing diverse content to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Positioned as a leading source of health information, Wash FM is set to make health education accessible to both local and international audiences.
With engaging programs focused on relevant health topics, Wash FM aims to become a key player in the health communication space, catering to the varied needs of its listeners.
Professor ‘Ronke Ogunmakin, board chairman of Wash FM, expressed her pride in the launch, noting that the station represents the culmination of over two decades of hard work by seasoned media professionals. She emphasized that Wash FM is not just a broadcasting platform, but a commitment to transforming health communication across Nigeria. The station's mission, according to Professor Ogunmakin, is to make quality health information accessible to all Nigerians.
Professor Ogunmakin also highlighted the station's dedication to integrating health and wellness into everyday life, with the goal of empowering listeners through accurate and relevant information. By addressing gaps in healthcare awareness and aligning with global standards like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Wash FM aims to foster a healthier, more informed society.
Beyond traditional health reporting, the station will cover topics such as environmental health, health technologies, and advocacy for progressive health policies. Through expert discussions, educational content, and strategic partnerships, Wash FM seeks to promote positive behavioral changes and elevate public health discourse.
She also stressed the importance of private sector participation in improving the nation’s health sector. As a private entity, Wash FM has the freedom to focus exclusively on health—a niche often underrepresented in public broadcasting—allowing it to provide in-depth, specialized information that can lead to meaningful outcomes.
OTN News further reports that with the launch of Wash 94.9 FM, a new standard has been set in specialized broadcasting, demonstrating the power of media as a tool for public good. The station's commitment to delivering high-quality health content could make it a trusted voice in households across Nigeria. More than just a radio station, Wash FM is launching a movement to inspire healthier living and foster a more health-conscious society.
