Reports reaching the news desk of OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News have it that Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned from his position as the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing health reasons for his decision.
OTN News gathered that the former Kano State governor made the announcement on Friday, citing health concerns as the rationale for his decision to step down.
Following his resignation, the APC’s National Vice Chairman is expected to assume leadership in an acting capacity pending the party’s national convention scheduled for December.
The move, it is understood, follows intense pressure from stakeholders within the APC, especially from the North Central zone, who have repeatedly called for the chairmanship position to return to their region.
Ganduje’s resignation is coming amid mounting internal opposition over his leadership style and the party’s internal power dynamics.
Multiple sources within the ruling party revealed that Ganduje’s personal belongings were earlier moved from his office at the APC national secretariat, further fueling speculation.
The development has therefore thrown the party’s headquarters into confusion, with staff and visitors visibly shocked by the unexpected news.
OTN News recalls that Ganduje’s tenure as APC chairman has been marked by controversy and challenges. He was elected as the APC National Chairman in August 2023, amidst internal party conflicts.
Before his election, Mr Ganduje served as the Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023, a period during when he was equally surrounded by some controversial allegations.
Although his purported resignation letter sites health concerns, top political beat sources familiar with the matter suggest that political tension within the party may have also played a role in his decision to step down.
In some quarters, it is believed that Ganduje has been accused financial impropriety and that his resignation is linked pressures arising from what some key members of the party have described as “excessive financial demands” imposed by his office.
Meanwhile, the APC has yet to issue an official statement on his resignation, leaving many to speculate about the implications of this development for the party.
