As Nigeria prepares to commemorate the 2025 edition of her Democracy Day, the Federal Government has announced that the usual democracy day parade will not hold as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will only address the nation in a national broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, among other programmes lined up for the celebration.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered from a statement released on Wednesday by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, who spoke on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day that there will be no Democracy Day parade.
The statement further reveals that the president will, in addition to the early morning national broadcast, appear before a joint session of the National Assembly later the same day at 12 noon.
“There will be no Democracy Day parade,” the statement clarified.
However, in place of the traditional parade, a public lecture with the theme:"Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms", where critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s democracy, too government officials, political leaders, and civil society stakeholders, will gather to review the country’s democratic trajectory, will be held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja by 4:00 p.m.
OTN News recalls that the observance and commemoration of Nigeria's Democracy Day on June 12 was announced by former Nigerian President, General Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 to take effect from June 12, 2019, as part of strategic moves to honour the sacrifices of Chief MKO Abiola,(GCFR) whose annulled mandate was posthumously recognized by the Federal Government.
The June 12, 2025 Democracy Day celebration, which marks the 7th year in a roll of observing Democracy Day on June 12, as against the May 29 date previously adopted for the celebration.
