Investing in Mental Well-being At Work is Key to Productivity, Says WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on Governments, employers, and individuals to prioritize mental health in the workplace as the global community observes World Mental Health Day 2024.

As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News in a statement released by WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, she highlighted the significant impact work environments have on mental well-being, either positively or negatively.

Moeti explained “A healthy workplace provides structure, purpose, and fosters social connections, helping individuals find personal value and identity."

However, she warned that poor working conditions, discrimination, harassment, and job insecurity are major contributors to mental health challenges.

OTN News revealed this year’s theme, “Healthy Minds at Work: Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace,” underscores the importance of supportive work environments in enhancing well-being, productivity, and social bonds.

Moeti cited alarming statistics, revealing that workplace-related mental health issues such as depression and anxiety result in lost productivity, costing the global economy approximately $1 trillion annually.

She urged Governments to revise employment and health policies to treat mental health as seriously as physical health. Also she said that  aligning these policies with international human rights standards and ensuring collaboration between health and employment services, would help reduce stigma and better support workers with mental health conditions.

“As we mark World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to investing in workplace mental health, because investing in people is the most valuable investment any organization can make,” Moeti concluded.
