Ibadan Indigenes Decry 'Historic Disappointment' as Monarch, Nigerians Slam Taye Currency Over Lyrics at Olubadan Coronation

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the fuji singer, Taye Currency is facing heavy backlash over his performance at the coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, with both traditional rulers and social media users describing his song choice as unfit for the royal occasion.

OTN News further reports that the controversy erupted after Taye Currency rendered the lyrics “were la fi n wo were” which translated as “we used insanity to cure insanity”, during his performance at the ceremony, which was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and several prominent monarchs.

Many critics argue that the lyrics cast a shadow over what was meant to be a day of cultural pride and celebration for Ibadanland.

Reactions on social media were swift and scathing. One user, @Frank24net, dismissed the performance bluntly: “Werey la fi’wo werey na song? Nonsense.” Another, @olatunbosun006, labeled it “a total embarrassment to his family,” while @Fortune4me_ola questioned why such a song was allowed on coronation day.

Some users blamed the event organizers for inviting the Fuji star, with @OluwaferanmiDan remarking: “It’s not his fault now; it’s the fault of the organizers that decided to platform someone whose last musical boom was 17 years ago.”

Others speculated that political interests influenced the choice of performer, questioning why celebrated Fuji artists such as Saheed Osupa, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (K1), or Malaika were overlooked.

Joining the chorus of disapproval, Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, the Olu of Kemta Orile in Ogun State, described the performance as “disgusting and uncultured,” and wondered why Taye Currency was selected for such a historic event.

For many Ibadan indigenes at home and abroad, the performance was seen as a missed opportunity to showcase the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Social media user @fesooyebade captured the mood, calling it “an historic disappointment, an embarrassment to Ibadan indigenes at home and in the diaspora.”

While the coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja was meant to mark a new chapter in Ibadan’s royal history, the spotlight has now shifted to a performance that many say undermined the dignity of the event.
