OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that, the Super Eagles striker and Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, has disclosed that the left side of his face no longer functions properly following the multiple facial fractures he suffered in 2021, an injury he says still affects his daily life despite his continued success on the pitch.
OTN News further reports that, the 26-year-old player, now starring for Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, opened up in an interview with Turkish outlet Fanatik, explaining that the damage from the horrific collision has never fully healed.
According to him, "Now, I only eat on the right side of my face. I can’t eat through the other side. The left side doesn’t function properly anymore.”
He told Fanatik that although he eventually returned to football, the long-term effects remain with him every day.
“I still feel numbness and sometimes pain. When I smile, only one side of my mouth moves fully. Eating is the biggest daily reminder – food falls out if I try to use the left side," he said.
OTN News recalls that, Osimhen sustained the injury in November 2021 during a Serie A match between Napoli and Inter Milan after a violent clash with defender Milan Škriniar.
The impact shattered his cheekbone and eye socket, requiring major reconstructive surgery, including 18 screws and a titanium plate. At the time, doctors feared he might lose vision in his left eye.
Despite the permanent nerve damage, Osimhen continues to perform at elite levels. He has scored 12 goals and registered 5 assists in 15 matches this season for Galatasaray, proving his resilience and determination.
The protective face mask he has worn since the injury, once a temporary medical requirement, has now become a permanent feature of his career.
OTN News, however, observes that, his latest revelation has triggered widespread concern among fans, reminding the football world that behind the iconic mask is an athlete still dealing with the long-term consequences of that traumatic afternoon in Naples.
