Fatality Averted As BRT Bus Catches Fire on Third Mainland Bridge, Disrupts Traffic Flow

Barely 10 months after a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) caught fire in Lagos, fatality was again averted on Tuesday as another BRT vehicle went up in flames along the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos, sparking panic among motorists and disrupting traffic flows.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered from a post shared on X by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), that the incident occured around 1pm on Tuesday.

A video attached to the post showed the high-capacity bus engulfed in fire.

Although the incident caused significant disruptions to traffic flows along the along the Adekunle, inwards Iyana Oworo corridor, authorities have confirmed that no casualty was reported.

A statement issued by LATSMA earlier reads, “A high-capacity bus is on fire on the Third Mainland Bridge, by Adekunle, inwards Iyana Oworo, affecting traffic.

“Efforts are ongoing to put out the fire, and our officers are on scene managing the traffic situation," the post read.

However, a subsequent video posted by LASTMA captured the arrival of the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service as fire fighters attempted to subdue the inferno.

Traffic officers were also deployed to redirect vehicles away from the affected area as emergency responders tackled the situation.

The cause of the fire had yet to be determined as of the time of filing this report.
