OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one David Effiong on full masquerade regalia for allegedly disrupting public peace, and going against the order of the state governor.
OTN News further reports as gathered that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, who disclosed this, said that the suspect will be charged to court accordingly in masquerade uniform.
OTN News recalls that the Governor of the state, Umo Eno, has announced a ban on the use of traditional masquerades across the state during during the festive period.
Eno disclosed that the development is necessary over security concerns.
OTN News observes that the Ekpo masquerade holds significant cultural value in Ibibio tradition, symbolising ancestral spirits during community festivals. They are referred to as gods.
However, recent incidents involving violence, harassment, and extortion—including the arrest of a masquerade group leader earlier this month—prompted the state government’s directive.
“Any masquerade found parading on the streets of Akwa Ibom State will be arrested and prosecuted,” Governor Eno warned, emphasising the administration’s obligation to maintain public peace.
OTN News, however, observes that reactions have been mixed as supporters applaud the decision as a proactive safety measure, while critics argue it threatens cultural heritage and raises questions about whether other public festivities will face similar restrictions.
