OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General O.O. Oluyede, has commended Lieutenant Yerima, the Nigerian Army officer who calmly stood his ground during a heated confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, describing the officer’s conduct as exemplary and professional.
OTN News further reports that, General Oluyede, in a statement released, lauded the officer’s composure and restraint during the exchange at a disputed plot of land in Abuja, which has since gone viral on social media.
The Defence Chief said Yerima’s behaviour reflected the core values of discipline, courage, and leadership instilled in officers of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
“The officer’s response reflects admirable composure and emotional intelligence—qualities that lie at the heart of military leadership training,” General Oluyede stated.
“His ability to remain calm, firm, and respectful under verbal provocation demonstrates discipline and professionalism,” he added.
The CDS, however, criticised the language used by Minister Wike during the confrontation, calling it “inappropriate and unbecoming” of a high-ranking government official. He urged political leaders to model civility and mutual respect when engaging with members of the Armed Forces.
“It is both unfortunate and inappropriate for a federal minister to use such language toward a serving officer,” Oluyede said. “Public officials should model restraint and respect, particularly when addressing those in uniform who embody national service and sacrifice.”
Reiterating the courage and commitment of the military, the Defence Chief cited a famous military maxim: “Every soldier has an element of madness, for while the right-thinking man withdraws from danger, a soldier charges towards it.”
General Oluyede disclosed that the Defence Headquarters is reviewing the incident to ensure proper resolution in line with military and civil protocols.
OTN News, however, observes that, the confrontation between Minister Wike and Lieutenant Yerima has generated widespread public debate, with many Nigerians applauding the officer’s calm demeanor and urging greater accountability and decorum from public officials.
