The Management of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, has suspended the ongoing semester examinations after the attack on, and eventual death of a 400-level student named Fabiyi Hammed Ayinla.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that the tragic incident occurred On Wednesday afternoon, stating that Ayinla was assaulted on campus by unidentified individuals believed to be members of a secret cult.
Despite the efforts of School Security Personnel, Ayinla sustained severe injuries and later died while being prepared for evacuation to Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) in Ilisan.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija further reports that Ayinla was a student in the History and Diplomatic Studies Department of the College of Humanities.
In a statement on Thursday, the University Public Relations Officer, Odubela Ayotunde, has announced that the examinations scheduled for Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, 2024, has been indefinitely suspended due to Fabiyi's death.
Ayotunde also stated that The University has reported the incident to the Nigeria Police, resulting in a few arrests.
According to bim, "Following the attempted abduction, attack, and death of a 400-level student on the main campus in Ijagun on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, the University Management wishes to inform Parents, Guardians, and the General Public of the Information available regarding the incident as follows:
"The University Management received reports of an attack on a student behind the CENVOS building on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, by some unidentified persons believed to be members of a secret cult.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija further reports that an examination had just ended, and 400-level students' were celebrating the usual "logging out" in front of the lecture theatre when some unidentified persons took the victim, identified as Fabiyi Hammed Ayinla of the History and Diplomatic Studies Department, College of Humanities. and unleashed attacks on him all of a sudden.
"Fabiyi’s colleagues initially assumed that the individuals were celebrating with him since it was also his birthday. Suspicion however arose when he attempted to resist being carried away, leading to a struggle as they dragged him towards the University CENVOS building. The security personnel on site immediately alerted the security unit, who responded promptly."
Upon seeing the security operatives, the assailants fled and escaped through the bush behind the CENVOS building while the victim was found alive but severely injured and bleeding profusely.
Ayinla was rushed to the University Health Centre and then later referred to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for further treatment.
Due to the severity of his head injuries, he was subsequently referred to Babcock University Teaching Hospital.
Ayinla was reported to have died while being transported to Babcock for further treatment.
The university wishes to clarify that there was no gunshot at the scene of the incident or anywhere on the campus.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that contrary to earlier media narratives, Ayinla was not abducted or attacked from the exam from the examination hall, as he was not participating in the 300-level examination (HIS 329: Modern European Political Thoughts) taking place at that particular time.
The University strongly condemns this heinous act and extends its sympathy to the parents and guardians of the deceased, praying that the Lord Almighty consoles the family.
Parents and students are urged to remain calm, as there is no cause for alarm. Students should go about their activities as usual, as the situation is under control.
The University Management appreciates the swift action of the Nigerian Police, which has restored calm to the campus.
We remain steadfast in our zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, gangsterism, and other deviant behaviors."
