Cybercriminals' Shutdown of GT Banks Website:Our Customers Data Not Compromised Says Management

The Management of Guaranty Trust Bank popularly known as GTBank, have confirmed an attempt by cyber hawks to clone the bank's website, assuring customers that the bank has had to work tirelessly to restore their website which was blighted by cybercrooks in one of a series of attacks aimed at Nigerian banks in recent years.

GTBank in a statement confirmed the attack but explained that its website was not cloned but suffered what it described as an “isolated incident of an attempt to compromise” the bank’s domain.

According to the bank, the hacking attempt occurred just a day after the bank renewed its domain name, causing a temporary disruption to the website, which left customers unable to access online services. 

The bank’s website therefore got shut down from Wednesday night and was rendered inaccessible to customers, many of whom feared that their data may have been compromised.

The incident has triggered a cacophony of media reports suggesting that the bank’s database may have been compromised.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News recalls that some Nigerian banks, including new generation FinTech banks, have been attacked by u identified cybercriminals in recent years with attendant spike in identity theft and compromise of depositors’ accounts.

However, GTBank said that it does “not store customer information on our website, and as such, there has been no instance of compromise of customer data.

According to the bank, the attempt ny cyber hawks to clone the bank's website came about barely a day after the bank renewed its domain registration but cybercrooks could not access the data of the bank's customers.

 “Our dedicated team of Information Security Experts is currently working round the clock to restore domain settings, and we can assure our customers that our website will be up shortly.

“We urge all our customers to please disregard the claims in these media reports and assure you of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding customer data,” GTBank had said, reassuring numerous customers of the bank of the safety of their banking information and financial transactions
