The media landscape, alongside the academic community, is building up momentum towards beaming the searchlight of national discourse on the Nigerian University system, as one of Nigeria's experienced university dons and administrators, Prof. Wande Abimbola draws from his acclaimed phenomenal leadership at the then University of Ife to x-ray the tertiary educational setup.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that this development was made known via a press statement released by the convener of Boiling Point Arena, a monthly simulcasting public discourse and interview programme with massive followings, Dr. Ayo Arowojolu.

The statement reveals that the September edition of the popular monthly interview discourse is focused on addressing the much talked-about decadence in Nigeria’s University system, noting that the announcement of the focal point has already started to generate intense enthusiasm and eagerness within the academia and media circles within and outside the country.

Dr.Arowojolu further revealed that the programme, which marks the 35th edition of the event, holds on Sunday September 14, 2025, when the internationally acclaimed scholar and erstwhile Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof Wande Abimbola is expected to occupy the hot seat, dissecting the state of affairs in the sector.

He also revealed that the programme will as usual, be transmitted via Zoom at 8pm, noting that the online show would to be broadcast live on six radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States as well as on a cable television, NSTV on GoTV Channel 316.

In his words, "This particular 35th episode since the current affairs programme began three years ago, is under the topic: “Nigerian Universities: Tower of Crises, Citadel of Missed Opportunities. Can the Lost Glory be Reclaimed?

“Expectedly, the bar of narratives will be raised on how to address the many years of systemic and infrastructural decadence in the Ivory towers in Nigeria with a view to charting a new path and reclaiming the lost glory of the nation’s apex education system.

Arowojolu hinted that Prof. Abimbola’s current pedigree as a teaching scholar in some universities in America where he presently resides at over age 92 would further deepen his capacity to offer enriching perspectives on how to rejig the universities in Nigeria.

The programme will be chaired by foremost traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, who is the Keynote Speaker of the discourse.

Boiling Point Arena is a news and general interest Group, comprising eminent personalities, including over 300 Professors, Media Professionals, technocrats, industry leaders, High Court Justices, traditional rulers, security top shots and several others.

OTN News observes that the discourse focused on the state of affairs in the Nigerian University system is coming at a time when the functions, structures, curriculum and problem-solving values of the universities in the scheme of affairs of the society have been called to question by critical stakeholders while both teaching and non teaching staff members of Nigerian universities continue to cry foul over what they describe as gross underpayment, neglect by successive governments, poor working conditions and infrastructural decays.

OTN News also recalls that Nigerian University dons recently requested a monthly pay rise to the tune of N2.5 million for university professors.
