OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that a vocal critic of the #EndSARS protests in 2020, Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, popularly known as Buhun Barkonun, has died during a sexual encounter with a woman in an Abuja hotel.
OTN News further reports as gathered that, Yusuf, 47, who served as Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, reportedly checked into a hotel in the Karu-Jikwoyi area of the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, alongside a woman identified as Ruth.
According to reports, Yusuf declined meals throughout his stay but consumed large amounts of alcohol. On the morning of his death, Ruth allegedly purchased an energy drink for him after observing that his health appeared to be deteriorating. Shortly after taking it, he collapsed into a coma.
Hotel staff and Ruth rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his sudden death.
OTN news recalls that, Yusuf, gained prominence in October 2020 as one of the leading figures in Abuja who opposed the #EndSARS protests, a nationwide movement calling for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) over brutality, extrajudicial killings, and corruption.
In a letter to the then-Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Yusuf urged protesters to vacate major roads in the Federal Capital Territory, arguing that the demonstrations were disrupting economic and social activities.
Speaking on behalf of the Indigenous People of the FCT, he warned that residents were running out of patience as food supplies rotted and daily wage earners struggled to survive.
Two days after the October 20, 2020, Lekki Toll Gate shooting, Yusuf reiterated his opposition to the protests in a Facebook post, insisting the movement had been hijacked.
“#IStandWithMyOpinion the #EndSARS protest have been hijacked and it’s now invoking security situation and we cannot destroy the peace and unity in FCT because we don’t have anywhere else to go,” he wrote. He later issued a 48-hour ultimatum for protesters to vacate the streets.
Beyond his controversial stance on #EndSARS, Yusuf was widely regarded as a passionate advocate for community development.
Reacting to his death, AMAC Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu described Yusuf as a committed public servant and “a vital bridge builder whose contributions to community development were invaluable.”
In a condolence message released through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kingsley Madaki, Maikalangu extended sympathies to Yusuf’s family, friends, associates, colleagues, and the residents of the FCT, describing his death as “an immense loss.”
Yusuf’s sudden death marks the end of a career defined by outspoken political views and grassroots activism in Abuja.
