2027 Election: Speculation Rises as Kwankwaso Reportedly Eyes APC Return

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has stirred speculation about a potential political realignment, suggesting that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his loyalists may soon defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 general election.
OTN News further reports that, Ahmad made the comment late Thursday on his X (formerly Twitter) account, shortly after Vice President Kashim Shettima publicly referred to Kwankwaso as “NNPP-APC” during a recent event.
OTN News observes that the unusual reference has triggered widespread debate within political circles.
“If nothing else, Vice President Shettima referring to Senator Kwankwaso as ‘NNPP-APC’ is a strong signal that the NNPP leader and his teeming supporters are on the verge of joining our great party, the APC,” Ahmad wrote.
He further noted that such a move could mark a turning point in Kano State politics. “This will help to have a politically united Kano, something long desired for the progress and stability of our state,” he added.
Though neither Kwankwaso nor the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has made an official statement on the matter, the comments have intensified speculation about shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, remains a key figure in northern politics.
OTN News further observes that his defection, if confirmed, could significantly reshape the political landscape, especially in Kano, a crucial battleground state.
