2025 LG Election: Lagos Electoral Commission Announces Date, Assures Free, Fair, Credible Election

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that in a move towards avoiding a leadership vacuum in the state’s councils, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has scheduled July 12, 2025 for the local government election, adding that it include 37 local council development authorities and 376 wards.
OTN News further reports that the Head of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Tope Ojo, who made this known in an announcement, noted that the election date was chosen to avoid a leadership vacuum in the state’s councils, and with the current local government administration nearing its end, the electoral body has ramped up efforts for a smooth election process.
OTN News observes that the statement added that the election for 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillor seats which will take place on the 12th of July 2025, If necessary, a re-run will occur on July 19, 2025.
OTN News further observes that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), who has officially launched the electoral process with the release of the notice of election, noted that all political parties must visit the commission headquarters to obtain nomination forms for their candidates.
The Head of Public Affairs of the commission who confirmed that a meeting with all registered political parties is set for Tuesday, stressed that the election guidelines will be published on April 17, 2025
OTN News also reports that Ojo stated that the campaigns and rallies will start on April 18 and end on July 9, adding that nomination forms for substituted and only candidate submissions must be submitted between June 18 and June 25, 2025.
The Chairman of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), assured a fair and level playing field for all political parties, and equally reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to holding a free, fair, inclusive, and credible election.
However, OTN News further reports that Okikiolu-Ighile encouraged political parties and aspirants to strictly follow the electoral timetable, while it is recalled that the last local government election in the state was held on July 24, 2021.
