After enduring nine traumatic days in captivity, 20 medical students from the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri have finally been rescued, bringing an end to an intense and highly sensitive operation.

These students, who were on their way to a medical conference in Enugu, were abducted in Benue State, an event that sparked widespread concern and outrage across the nation.

Their rescue, a significant breakthrough, has led to a formal meeting with Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, according to a report by OPEN TELEVISION Naija (OTN) News.

On Sunday evening, at approximately 5:35 p.m., the freed students were escorted into the Force Headquarters by their respective Vice-Chancellors.

The meeting is being held with several key figures in attendance, including not only the Inspector-General of Police but also the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Benneth Igweh, and his counterpart from Benue State.

Their presence underscores the gravity of the incident and the concerted effort from various levels of law enforcement to ensure the safety of the students.

The abduction of these medical students had provoked a nationwide outcry, with calls for immediate action. The response from the police was swift and multifaceted.

The Inspector General, Egbetokun ordered a substantial deployment of resources to Benue State, including tactical operatives, helicopters, drones, and specialized vehicles, all aimed at securing the safe return of the kidnapped students.

To bolster these efforts, additional detectives were dispatched to the region to aid in intelligence gathering and operational support.

Following their rescue, OTN News revealed that the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that no ransom was paid to the kidnappers. Instead, he highlighted that the students were freed through a well-coordinated, highly professional operation executed by the police.

This successful outcome, he stressed, was a testament to the tactical prowess and commitment of the force’s operatives, who worked tirelessly to bring the ordeal to a close without succumbing to the demands of the abductors.
