As the world currently debates the invasion of Caratas, Venezuelan capital city and the capture of the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, here are essential facts you should know about the Delta Force that spinned the complex mission successfully.
It is an elite US Army special operations unit, known as Delta Force. It actually carried out the raid to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife on Saturday, January 3, 2026.
Delta Force is one of the US military’s premier special missions units, specializing in counterterrorism, hostage rescue, direct action and special reconnaissance — often against high-value targets.
It was created in 1977. Delta Force is placed directly under the Joint Special Operations Command and stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. It is made up of eight operational sabre squadrons.
Nearly all information about Delta Force is highly classified but, generally, it is called upon to carry out some of the most complex, covert and dangerous missions at the direction of the president of the United States and secretary of defense.
Similar to the US Navy’s renowned SEAL Team 6, Delta Force has played a key role in some of the most high-profile US military operations in recent memory — including the 1993 mission to rescue American service members in Somalia after their helicopter was shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu. That mission was subsequently made famous by the 2001 film “Black Hawk Down.”
Delta Force was also part of Operation Just Cause in Panama, which led to the capture of Panama dictator Manuel Noriega in December 1989 and has been cited by multiple Trump administration officials as precedent.
