US Sends Critical Military Supplies to Nigeria, Reaffirms Security Partnership Amid Terrorism Fight

By: Israel Adeleke

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the United States has delivered what it describes as “critical military supplies” to Nigeria, reinforcing ongoing security cooperation between both countries amid Abuja’s persistent fight against terrorism and insecurity.

OTN News further reports as gathered that the handover took place in Abuja and is confirmed in a post shared on X by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

According to the command, the delivery forms part of sustained military collaboration between Washington and Abuja.

“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja,” AFRICOM said, adding that the support “bolsters Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership.”

The post also tags the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, @USinNigeria, highlighting coordinated engagement between American diplomatic and military institutions.

OTN News observes that the latest delivery comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s prolonged security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and other violent threats across parts of the country.

Successive Nigerian governments have sought international support, particularly in intelligence sharing, logistics, and military hardware, to strengthen the country’s counterterrorism capacity.

OTN News recalls that in November 2025, the administration of President Bola Tinubu formally appealed to the United States to deploy its military to assist Nigeria in combating terrorism in several states of the federation.

The appeal was made public by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, while responding to the United States’ decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged religious freedom violations.

OTN News further recalls that Nigeria strongly rejected the CPC designation, dismissing it as inaccurate and unreflective of realities on the ground.

The Federal Government also pushed back against comments attributed to United States President Donald Trump, who alleges widespread killings of Christians in Nigeria and cites claims of genocide as justification for redesignating the country as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

President Trump later confirmed that U.S. forces carry out airstrikes on terrorist locations in Sokoto State, in Nigeria’s North-West region, marking a significant escalation in direct U.S. military involvement linked to Nigeria’s security situation.

Despite diplomatic tensions over human rights and religious freedom narratives, the delivery of military supplies signals that defense and security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States remains active.

However, Analysts said the move reflects Washington’s strategic interest in regional stability and Nigeria’s role as a key security partner in West Africa, even as both countries continue to navigate sensitive political and diplomatic disagreements.
