OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the President, Bola Tinubu, has approved a new welfare policy that grants lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
OTN News further reports as gathered that the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he outlined the achievements of the ministry and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional performance across all agencies.
The policy, described as a landmark initiative to boost officer welfare, was disclosed in a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham.
According to the statement, Tunji-Ojo expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, noting that the Renewed Hope Agenda is already yielding positive results across agencies under the ministry.
“We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions,” Tunji-Ojo said, adding that more than 50,000 officers have been promoted within the last two years. He stressed that future promotions will be based on a new system that prioritises capacity and performance.
The minister also unveiled institutional reforms, including the development of new training manuals and the construction of a world-class Fire Academy, designed to rival leading global institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.
Beyond welfare and training, Tunji-Ojo underscored the importance of mental health in the workplace, assuring officers of the ministry’s full support in addressing such needs.
He, however, urged the Federal Fire Service to embrace partnerships with the private sector, highlighting that such collaborations are vital for enhancing service delivery, improving infrastructure, and modernising firefighting operations across the country.
