Senator Ndume Warns APC May Sink as Defections Overload Party

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly, has raised alarm over the growing influx of defectors into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that the party is at risk of imploding under the weight of unchecked political migration.
OTN News further reports that the senator who said this during an interview with Arise Television, earlier this week, likened the APC to an "overloaded ship" that could soon sink if the trend continues.
The vocal lawmaker expressed deep concern about the party's current direction under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and called for an immediate halt to the open-door policy toward defectors from opposition parties.
He warned, “Oppositions joining APC are too much. Tinubu should stop them,” further warning that the country’s democracy cannot thrive without a robust and credible opposition.
“Jumping ship without ideology or conviction weakens our democracy and endangers the future of the country,” he added.
OTN News observes that Ndume’s remarks come amid a wave of high-profile defections to the APC in recent months, with many politicians abandoning their former parties in a bid to align with the ruling government.
The senator argued that these defections, driven by opportunism rather than shared vision or principles, are eroding political accountability and destabilizing the nation’s democratic structure.
While he reaffirmed his current loyalty to the APC, Ndume did not rule out the possibility of leaving the party if its direction does not improve.
“I still believe this president has the capacity to fix things,” he said. “But if nothing changes, I will have to reconsider. I will not go down with a sinking ship.”he added.
