President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for an end to what he described as "Israeli aggression in Gaza.”
The Nigerian President made the call while speaking at a high-level Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia earlier in the week.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered from a statement by the President's spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, that Tinubu emphasized Nigeria's strong commitment to a two-state solution, advocating for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians as the pathway to lasting peace.
He highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis in Palestine and urged swift action to relieve the "immeasurable suffering" experienced in the region."
“The prolonged conflict in Palestine has inflicted great suffering,” Tinubu stated, stressing that nations committed to justice and humanity must work to end this crisis.
He called on all parties to uphold civilian safety and proportionality, in line with international law, while balancing self-defense rights with the need to avoid unnecessary civilian harm.
President Tinubu reiterated that Nigeria backs a two-state solution rooted in equality and mutual respect, which, he noted, requires honest dialogue and understanding of historical complexities rather than escalatory actions.
At the summit, leaders from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League gathered to discuss the Middle East conflict and explore paths toward peace.
Tinubu praised Saudi Arabia's role in convening the summit, which he described as a pivotal step in focusing international attention on the region’s issues.
He proposed creating a secretariat to implement the summit’s decisions, with a committee of select Heads of Government to oversee peace initiatives and provide regular updates to OIC and Arab League leaders.
Meanwhile, a cross section of Nigerians, while reacting to the involvement of the Nigerian President in mediation interventions in the middle East have heavily criticized President Tinubu for failing to solve the local security issues ravaging Nigeria, especially the Northern part of the country where a new terror group, Lukarawa has reportedly emerged, wrecking havoc to lives of people in Sokoto, Kebbi and other states.
"Charity begins at home", said one of the Netizens on Twitter. "The President should end the insurgency in Nigeria first", another Netizen posted.
