The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has sanctioned a newly developed national policy aimed at tackling the ongoing surge in the migration of healthcare professionals from the country and reverse the damage done to the country by the mass exodus of medical professionals to foreign lands.
The announcement was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, in a statement released on Monday.
As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION Naija (OTN) News, the Minister elaborated that this policy is a meticulously crafted strategy designed not only to manage the current trend of health workforce migration but also to harness the potential of the nation's medical professionals, and importantly, to reverse the outflow.
The policy goes beyond mere management and it seeks to create conditions that are conducive to drawing back skilled professionals who have left the country.
By offering a range of attractive incentives, the Government hopes to encourage these healthcare workers to return to Nigeria and reintegrate into the national health system.
Pate emphasized that the policy is particularly mindful of the critical need for work-life balance in the medical profession. It includes comprehensive provisions such as routine health checks, mental health support, and the enforcement of reasonable working hours, with a special focus on the well-being of younger doctors.
OTN News gathered that this holistic approach is expected to not only retain existing talent but also restore confidence in the nation’s healthcare system by addressing both the professional and personal needs of its workforce.
