Government workers across the length and breadth of Oyo State can now heave a sigh of significant economic relief from current economic hardship in Nigeria as Governor Seyi Makinde has made good his promise ti commence the payment of N80,000 minimum wage to workers in the state.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that in fulfillment of Governor Seyi Makinde’s pledge, Oyo State Government has commenced payment of new N80,000 minimum wage, disbursing N12 billion to its workforce, and also abolishing the N4,000 retirement form fee to further ease financial burdens, a move which is expected to save nearly N20 million for about 4,500 workers nearing retirement.

OTN News further reports that the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, who confirmed this new development explained that the salary adjustment benefits all categories of workers. 

According to him, employees on Grade Levels I to VI now receive an additional N50,000, while those on Grade Level 17 have seen their salaries increase by over N180,000.

Furthermore, he said, pensioners also benefited from the new wage structure, with a minimum pension set at N25,000 and a 33 percent increment granted to over 40,000 retirees.

In addition to that the state abolished the N4,000 retirement form fee, a move expected to save nearly N20 million for about 4,500 workers nearing retirement.

Meanwhile, one of the workers on Oyo state government’s payroll, who spoke with news men, but pleaded to be anonymous, confirmed receipt of new minimum wage.

She said, “ Yes, the new minimum wage was paid yesterday, just like the governor promised us. We were shocked and happy at the same time.”

OTN News observes that this development is coming after Gov Seyi Makinde’s approval of the new minimum wage in November 2024.
