As part of moves towards promoting inclusivity for persons with hearing impairment in the Gateway State, the Ogun state House of Assembly under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide has passed a resolution for the inclusion of sign language interpretation in all state government programmes.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the passage of the resolution titled “H.R No. 132/OG/2025: Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment” followed a debate by the lawmakers on the desirability of the proposed initiative.
The sponsor of the Bill, Babatunde Tella, who opened the debate on the motion leading to the passage of the resolution on Tuesday, noted that the inclusion of sign language interpretation in state government programmes would reinforce the government’s commitment to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in national and international human rights frameworks.
Other lawmakers who supported the motion including Honourables Omolola Bakare, Kashamu Rasheed and the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, urged the state government to mandate organisers of all programmes, including executive, legislative and judicial functions, to have a certified sign language interpreter present to communicate with the deaf and mute.
In addition, the lawmakers called on all relevant ministries, departments and agencies, including the Ministry of Information and Strategy and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, to ensure compliance with the resolution
