Ogun Governor Assures of Maximum Safety at Gateway Games 2024 After Diesel Tanker Fire Near Alake’s Sports Complex

Following a diesel tanker explosion near the Alake’s Sports Complex in Abeokuta, one of the venues for the ongoing National Sports Festival on Tuesday, the Ogun State Government has assured all participants in the Gateway Games of maximum safety, assuring both participants and residents that the situation is under control and there is no cause for alarm.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed that although a fire broke out at the facility in question, it was swiftly contained without any casualties or damage to the sports facility.
Akinmade stated that, "The incident this afternoon involving a gas tanker close to one of our facilities for the National Sports Festival was very unfortunate.”
"We thank God that the fire was immediately put out to avert any casualties."
He commended the quick intervention of the state’s fire service and the alertness of officials stationed at the complex, stressing that their proactive response prevented a potential disaster.
“We want to assure all our athletes and the people of the state of safety and that there is no cause for alarm as the situation is under absolute control,” he added.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and smooth conduct of the National Sports Festival, noting that all necessary precautions and safety mechanisms have been put in place to ensure the wellbeing of all athletes, officials, and spectators throughout the event.
