Lagos Signs Three MoUs to Convert Waste Into Wealth

By: Israel Adeleke

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Lagos State Government has signed three separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with reputable companies to transform waste management in the state by converting waste into valuable resources, marking a major step toward a sustainable circular economy.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, the agreements demonstrate the state’s “irrevocable commitment” to advanced waste conversion and reduction of the volume of refuse reaching landfills.

OTN News further reports as gathered that, the signing took place during the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, which featured panel sessions and discussions on sustainable environmental practices.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the initiative represents Lagos State’s transition from traditional “pick and dump” waste management to a more sustainable “waste-to-wealth” system.

“The new partnerships will help reduce the quantity of waste that ends up at our landfill sites and create new economic opportunities through recycling and renewable resource production,” Wahab stated.

One of the agreements, signed with HAK Waste Ltd., will establish a circular beverage container recycling and recovery system through a deposit refund scheme anchored on the Extended Producer’s Responsibility Mechanism (EPRM). This, Adeshina said, underscores investor confidence in the state’s environmental policies.

A second MoU, with Haggai Logistics Ltd., will see the establishment of a world-class tyre recycling plant in Lagos — the first of its kind in Nigeria — to process end-of-life tyres using modern and environmentally sound technologies.

The third MoU, signed with Mondo 4 Africa, focuses on converting non-recyclable plastic waste into sustainable fuel and other valuable products using eco-friendly technologies.

The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the development as part of the agency’s effort to promote private sector participation in managing the massive daily waste generated in the state.

“LAWMA and the government alone cannot handle the quantum of waste Lagos produces daily. These partnerships are vital to turning waste into a resource and ultimately, into wealth,” Gbadegesin said.

Representatives of the partner companies expressed their appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its forward-thinking environmental policies and pledged full cooperation to make the waste-to-wealth initiative a success.

Also present at the MoU signing were Rotimi Akodu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment; Omobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services; and Mahamood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services.

However, OTN News observes that with these new agreements, Lagos reinforces its leadership in environmental innovation, charting a sustainable path toward a cleaner, greener, and wealth-generating future.
