In a bid to alleviate concerns, the Lagos Police Command has clarified that it is not holding anyone in custody for participating in the ongoing protests against hardship and bad governance in the state.
The Command’s Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos that no protesters were in custody.
“All protesters arrested on Thursday were released the same day. The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, ordered the State CID to release them,” Hundeyin said.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that the Commissioner then provided water and snacks for the protesters. The demonstrators also paused their activities temporarily to observe their Jumat prayer at the park.
One of the protest leaders, Inibehe Effiong, addressed the crowd at Gani Fawehinmi Park, confirming that about 12 protesters had been arrested on Thursday.
Effiong later confirmed the police spokesperson’s statement that all arrested protesters had been released. He praised the police and other security agencies for their professional handling of the protest in Lagos.
However, on Friday, #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters gathered in front of the park in Ojota for the second day.
However, OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police was present there to oversee the protest and prevent any disruption by hoodlums.
