OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, has narrowly escaped a suspected assassination attempt over the weekend as armed gunmen reportedly invaded his Surulere residence in the early hours of Sunday.

OTN News further reports that an aide to the NURTW boss, who spoke with Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity as well as confirming the incident, explained that the attackers, unaware that Sego was not at home at the time, forcefully gained entry into his residence and assaulted the security guard on duty before leaving upon learning that their target was absent.

According to the aide, “It is true that some gunmen invaded the chairman’s house between Saturday and Sunday. They forced their way into the building and overpowered the security man. After attacking him, they left when they were told the chairman was not around.”

The aide who further explained that Sego was on the Island during the time of the attack, which may have thwarted the assailants’ plans, noted, “We were on the Island, but they thought that we were in Surulere."

Furthermore, he revealed that the attackers left a chilling message for the security guard, saying, “Before they eventually left, they tied the security man and took his picture with a threat that he should not tell the chairman anything or they would come back and kill him,” the aide disclosed.

However, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that he had not yet received any report regarding the incident.
