The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to various cases of examination malpractice.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija (OTN) News reports that during the announcement of the 2024 WASSCE results on Monday, the Head of WAEC Nigeria Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, explained that the number of withheld results is 4.37% lower than the 16.29% recorded in the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates.
This accounts for 11.92% of the 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the exam, which took place from April 30 to June 24, 2024.
Dr. Dangut emphasized that WAEC remains committed to penalizing all forms of examination malpractice, warning that those involved, be it schools, supervisors, teachers, or students are jeopardizing the integrity of the educational system.
He highlighted ongoing issues, such as the persistent use of mobile phones in exam halls despite a ban and organized cheating in some schools.
However, he stressed that these cases are currently under investigation, and the findings will be reviewed by the appropriate WAEC committee for final decisions. Affected candidates will be informed of the outcomes through their schools, and they have the option to appeal the decisions via WAEC's website.
Dr. Dangut also reported that 73.79% of the candidates achieved credit or above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics, representing 1,332,089 candidates out of the total 1,805,216 who took the exam.
He encouraged candidates to check their results online and apply for their Digital Certificates, which will be available 48 hours after results are uploaded.
Furthermore, he added that those who have met their financial obligations to WAEC can access their results within the next 12 hours, with Result Listings to be sent to schools shortly.
OTN News recalls that the 2024 WASSCE was conducted in four WAEC member countries which are Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia.
