Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has condemned the rise in extortion allegations involving police officers nationwide, specifically citing a recent case in Bayelsa State.
As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News, officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine were accused of extorting N10 million from local youths.
The Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, revealed on Friday that the money had been recovered with the help of the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16.
The officers have been detained and are currently undergoing an orderly room trial.
“The Nigeria Police Force, led by IGP Egbetokun, is committed to a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, addressing every allegation with seriousness,” Adejobi stated.
The IGP has assured the public of thorough investigations into all complaints against officers.
OTN News further gathered that in line with the pursuit of accountability, Egbetokun has ordered strict penalties for officers found guilty of misconduct.
Adejobi emphasized that this will serve as a deterrent to maintain the integrity of the Force.
The IGP also encouraged the public to use the designated Police helpline to report any concerns or complaints.
