In a heart-wrenching confession highlighting the sad realities of struggles poverty and unemployment, a 40-year-old man in the northern state of Kaduna inon  Nigeria has opened up revealing that he stole two yams because he was driven by hunger and had no other means to survive.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has accused a 40 years old man, Cletus Gandu, of criminal trespass and theft.

"I stole yam on two occasions because I was hungry. Please show mercy," GGandu begged the court.

However, OTN News eports that Prosecutor, Marcus Audu of the NSCDC informed the court that Alice Daniel is the owner of the farm and he reported the theft at the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on July 15.

Audu claimed that Gandu had stolen yams from Daniel's farm in Zonkwa twice, violating sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

At the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Gandu pleaded for leniency, admitting he stole yam twice out of desperation due to hunger.

Judge Michael Bawa, acknowledging Gandu's guilty plea, postponed the sentencing to August 6 and ordered his remand.
