OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that a new 600-page biography of the late Muhammadu Buhari, titled “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari,” Authored by Dr. Charles Omole, has revealed explosive details regarding the 2023 presidential elections, a detail explaining why Buhari withheld support from Yemi Osinbajo’s presidential bid in favour of Bola Tinubu.
According to the book, Buhari was stunned by Osinbajo’s decision to run against his political benefactor.
He is quoted as saying: “I don’t know Osinbajo from anywhere; I met him only through Tinubu.”
The biography noted that Buhari found it “strange” that Osinbajo would challenge Tinubu so openly.
OTN News further reports that Omole, who wrote that the former President was unimpressed by Osinbajo’s approach, added “Sources also said that Buhari was not impressed that Osinbajo did not ‘consult’ him or seek his advice. Instead, Osinbajo simply ‘informed’ him.”
The book added that Buhari reportedly questioned the Vice President’s loyalty, wondering:“How [could] his Vice President go against his benefactor in such an open way?”
The book further reveals that a powerful “cabal” within the Villa was working against Tinubu, attempting to impose a different candidate through a “fake presidential order.”
However, Buhari’s refusal to interfere with party rules ultimately protected Tinubu’s path.
“Ironically, Buhari’s strict enforcement of the rules may have indirectly aided Tinubu, as Buhari’s fastidiousness repeatedly thwarted the cabal’s plans to impose another candidate,": Omole wrote.
The author, however, added that while the cabal plotted, Aisha Buhari, the wife of the former president, was an outspoken supporter of Tinubu.
The book notes that her: “Enthusiastic support for Tinubu’s candidacy challenged the powerful cabal. However, she remained unconcerned.”
