Nigeria's President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to achieving significant progress in areas such as infrastructure, food and energy security, education, and long-term economic growth, noting that he is not in power to cater for his personal gains.
Speaking during a meeting with the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, led by ex-Senate President, Ken Nnamani, Tinubu emphasized that his focus is on serving the nation, not personal gain.
“I didn’t come for money or to take advantage of the situation, i came to work. I asked for the votes, and Nigerians gave them to me,” Tinubu, a former senator himself, stated after exchanging pleasantries with his former legislative colleagues.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) gathered that the meeting was attended by 16 past leaders of the National Assembly, including former senate presidents, speakers, and their deputies.
Tinubu expressed gratitude for their bipartisan support and encouraged them to continue promoting unity and cooperation in order to advance national development.
The President acknowledged the complexities of legislative functions, constitutional reforms, and nation-building, but he remains optimistic about Nigeria’s future through collaborative efforts.
He also reflected on past mistakes, including the country’s failure to reinvest oil wealth into local communities and education.
“We ignored our communities and the resources that sustain us. We neglected our children’s education, just look at the rundown schools. We can’t complain about low enrollment without creating better learning environments,” Tinubu said.
He outlined his administration's plan to address key challenges by improving infrastructure, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, exploring alternative energy sources, and enhancing energy security.
“We’ve come a long way, and I promise we will do our best,” he affirmed, urging the former presiding officers to continue offering their expertise in governance.
On behalf of the delegation, Senator Nnamani pledged full support for the Tinubu administration, acknowledging the significant challenges the President faces, including insecurity, economic downturns, and infrastructural decline.
"Though, these problems are not of your making, it has fallen upon you to tackle them, and we believe your experience will see you through,” Nnamani said, commending Tinubu’s courage, especially regarding local Government autonomy."
He assured that the group stands ready to assist in rebuilding the nation and ensuring prosperity for all citizens.
Nnamani also lauded the President for appointing members of their forum to key national positions, recognizing their contributions to Nigeria’s development.
