Hunger in Nigeria:Reopen Borders For Regulated Food Trade -FCCPC Tells FG

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has urged the Federal Government to reopen the nation's borders to permit the legal importation of food items, to address the issue of hunger in Nigeria.

OPEN TELEVISION Naija gathered that this appeal was made during an advocacy meeting with traditional rulers and other stakeholders at the Emir’s palace in Bauchi.

The Acting Executive Chairman of the FCCPC, Adamu Abdullahi, emphasized the Commission’s continuous efforts in advocacy and raising public awareness about price gouging and other unfair trade practices in Nigerian markets.

Abdullahi explained that their visit aimed to educate stakeholders on their rights, help them identify counterfeit products, and guide them on how to lodge complaints properly.

He noted that reopening the borders could facilitate food importation, potentially stabilizing market prices.

Abdullahi added, “As mediators, we ensure that substandard products are either repaired, replaced, or refunded to the consumer if they are dissatisfied with their purchase.”

OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that Abdullahi expressed serious concerns about the rising cost of goods, linking the issue to the recent strengthening of the naira against the dollar, and described the situation as unacceptable. "The FCCPC is committed to ensuring fair competition, protecting consumers, and fostering a regulated marketplace.

We urge citizens to be vigilant and report any violations," he added.

In response, the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Adamu, noted the severe impact of rising food prices on the populace, causing significant hardship. Represented by the District Head of Lame, Alhaji Yakubu Aliyu Lame, the Emir called on the Federal Government to take urgent measures to reduce food prices, highlighting the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

The traditional leaders in the state are prepared to assist in raising public awareness about the Commission’s activities, ensuring the message reaches the intended audience, Adamu assured.
