Driven by a commitment to enhance healthcare in Nigeria, a former UK-based Nigerian Medical Doctor, Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, after years of groundbreaking work in the UK, where he pioneered a life-saving and innovative prostate cancer surgery, has set out a session with doctors from various hospitals to demonstrate a new, minimally invasive method of treating prostate cancer.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija (OTN) News reports that the innovative medical treatment advocated by Dr. Ekwueme who arrived in Lagos with a mission to revolutionize prostate cancer treatment in Nigeria, is considered a medical breakthrough for treatment of prostate cancer because the new prostatectomy procedure does not require the usual opening up of patients, loss of blood and the attendant long period of recuperation by operated patients associated with previously known surgical procedures.
Upon his return to Nigeria, Dr. Ekwueme gathered a group of doctors from various hospitals across the country to introduce them to the highly advanced form of prostate cancer surgery that has been transformative in the UK.
During a demonstration, OTN News gathered that Dr. Ekwueme showcased his groundbreaking laparoscopic keyhole surgery - a procedure that offers a far less invasive alternative to the traditional open surgeries that many patients have endured in the past.
Dr. Ekwueme explained that this method employs a small keyhole camera, which magnifies the prostate, allowing for unparalleled visibility and precision during the operation.
He highlighted the major advantages of this procedure stating that it not only to ensures that the patient is free from cancer, but also, preserves vital functions, such as erectile ability, which are often compromised in traditional prostrate surgeries or prostatectomy.
Additionally, patients undergoing this procedure typically spend just one night in the hospital, as opposed to the extended stays associated with open surgery, which often require weeks of recovery.
OTN News recalls that one of Dr. Ekwueme’s recent patients, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke openly about the transformative nature of this surgery.
With visible relief and joy, the patient shared his experience, stating that, "I feel incredibly good after the surgery. In my entire life, I have never seen anything like this. No large incisions, no blood loss, no vein damage, and no long hospital stays—just a single night in the hospital."
The patient was particularly struck by how swiftly he regained mobility after the operation. "As you can see, I am able to walk around freely, moving from one place to another without any discomfort," he added.
The patient went on to express his deep appreciation for the healthcare services in Nigeria, noting that although he had the financial means to travel abroad for the surgery, he chose to undergo the procedure in Nigeria.
"I could have gone abroad for this operation, but I preferred to have it done here at home."
"What is there to find in abroad that we don’t already have right here in Nigeria? Like our people say, 'What you’re searching for in Sokoto is right there in your sokoto (pocket).' We just need to look inward and appreciate what we have," he explained.
Concluding his testimony, the patient declared the surgery to be the best medical procedure he had ever experienced, expressing immense gratitude for the success of the keyhole surgery and the hope it brings for the future of advanced healthcare in Nigeria.
Dr. Ekwueme’s efforts signal a promising new era for medical innovation within the country, and his work has opened the door to transformative healthcare solutions that are now within reach for many Nigerians.
