Fight Against Corruption: Police Detain Officers For Demanding N100,000 Before Investigating R@pe Case

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that in what the force describes as zero tolerance for bribery and corruption, the Imo State Police Command has arrested and detained one of its officers who allegedly demanded a one hundred thousand naira kickback before they could intervene a rape case of a fifteen-year-old brought before them at the State Police Command.
OTN News further reports as gathered that the state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, who confirmed the detention in a statement he released to journalists in Owerri, said that an orderly room trial would be conducted on the officers involved.
According to him, the arrest followed credible information received by the Command from the family of the victim, who had earlier drawn public attention to the incident through a viral video circulating on social media.
“The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing thorough investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Upon conclusion of investigation, he will be arraigned in court with the appropriate charge(s).
“Furthermore, the Command has identified and detained the police officers alleged to have engaged in professional misconduct in the handling of the case. An Orderly Room Trial has been scheduled to commence on Monday, 12th January, 2026, in line with extant police regulations.
“The Imo State Police Command reiterates its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability, assuring members of the public that justice will be served in this matter,” Okoye assured.
OTN News recalls that a viral video surfaced online, alleging that a 15-year-old girl from Umuekweye, Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, was allegedly raped by a twenty-four-year-old, Wisdom Onyeaju, at their family compound during the yuletide.
OTN News further recalls that the video showed where the elder sister of the victim explained that the suspect, who took advantage of the minor, threatened her with a knife before forcefully having his way into her.
The sister further explained that the victim, who returned home with other members of her family, stayed home alone when others had gone to watch the village masquerade on display.
She stressed that as a result of the victim been at home all to herself, was the moment the evil act happened.
