The Ogun State Police Command has distanced itself from a viral security alert which bears the photograph of the Ogun Commissioner of Police, currently circulating on social media, describing it as false, deceptive, unapproved, and capable of instilling unnecessary fear in the hearts of Ogun residents.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the Igun Police command, in a statement on Wednesday, said it has observed a spike in unsolicited security tips being shared online, many of which falsely suggest a state of emergency or significant instability in the state.
The command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, emphasised that the viral post with the CP’s image did not come from the Ogun Police Command and was never authorised or sanctioned by the Command.
Odutola noted that individuals and groups have been recycling old videos and publishing alarming content using divisive language to create fear among residents, warning those behind such acts to desist from doing so.
The statement reads invpart, “One of such misleading posts, currently in circulation with the picture of the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD, is deceptive, unauthorized, and was made without any directive, approval, or recourse to the Command.
“It has been further observed that certain individuals and groups are recycling old videos, publishing alarming content, and using divisive language with intent to cause panic and heighten fear among residents.
“These mischief-makers are warned to desist from posting frightening videos, voice-overs, or unverified claims, the majority of which are false.
While urging residents to remain calm, the Command assured that all communities that have raised genuine concerns are under close surveillance and additional personnel and operational assets has been deployed to strengthen security in identified areas.
“Residents of Ogun State and stakeholders are urged to remain calm and reassured. All areas identified by well-meaning communities seeking police attention are under close surveillance, with additional deployment of police personnel and assets to enhance safety and security in affected locations” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Command has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and advised the public to rely only on official communication channels for credible security information.
