OTN News further reports that the invitation follows a viral video that surfaced online, showcasing the Okoya brothers spraying naira notes while a police officer held stacks of the currency.
The act which is believed to be a clear contravention of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the public.
OTN News also reports that in response to the viral video, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) swiftly identified and detained the police officer who held stacks of the currency.
Furthermore, the spokesperson of the NPF, Muyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that disciplinary action would be taken to uphold the integrity of the police force.
Following the arrest of the police officer, Nigerians took to social media to express their opinions on the matter, many called for the Okoya brothers to be arrested and held accountable for their actions. While some may have thought that the brothers would evade interrogation, the EFCC has made it clear that they will not be spared.
OTN News gathered that the Okoya brothers have been directed to report to the head of the special operations team at the EFCC’s Lagos office by 10 am on Monday, January 13, 2025, in an official invitation signed by the acting director of the Lagos directorate of the EFCC, Michael Wetkas.
However, the EFCC remains resolute in its pursuit of justice, demonstrating its commitment to enforcing the law and protecting the integrity of the nation’s currency.
OTN News recalls that in 2024, the EFCC ramped up its enforcement of naira abuse by celebritries, citing Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
OTN News further recalls that on April 4, Bobrisky, the social media crossdresser celebrity, was arrested and arraigned on a six-count charge by the EFCC for defacing the naira note.
Also, on April 16, the EFCC filed a three-count charge against Cubana Chief Priest, the socialite and social media influencer, over alleged naira abuse, which he later pleaded not guilty.
