On the eve of Local Government elections in Rivers State, reports reaching OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA OTN News have it that tension has gripped the state as some suspected of arsonists reportedly detonated explosives at the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday morning.
Nigeria's ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the principal opposition political party in Rivers State of which the state is set to hold its local government elections today, Saturday, October 5.
OTN News reports that the attack on the secretariat of the APC located in Port Harcourt is coming just a few hours before the commencement of the local council polls.
OTN News gathered from video clips that surfaced online that there are indications and suggestions that the explosion incident involved use of dynamites, which caused damages to the main gate and the security post of the APC secretariat, as well as some portions of a nearby building.
OTN News further reports that the Chairman of the party’s caretaker committee, Chief Tony Okocha, in his press release has attributed the attack on the APC secretariat to supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
In his wrds: “At the wee hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office.
“The second attempt to set it ablaze was foiled as the security at the gate quickly put out the fire.”
The APC had previously declared its intention to abstain from the local government elections scheduled for this Saturday throughout the state.
In a similar twist of events, the ruling People's Democratic Party in the state, under the leadership of Hon. Chukwuemeka Aaron, also announced its decision to refrain from participating in the election.
OTN News recalls that the political temperature of Rivers State has been on a rising spate in recent times, with the exchange of words, tussles for political superiority between the camps of incumbent Governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara and Rivers State political stalwart, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
OTN News also recalls that on the eve of the Local Government Elections in the state, we reported an attempt by some miscreants, allegedly dressed in police uniform, to break into the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission(RSIEC) office and cart away election materials in the wees hours of the night on Friday.
