The Consulate-General of Nigeria in New York has become a hub of cultural discovery, as 11 Americans recently uncovered their Nigerian roots through ancestry DNA testing.

The emotional "African Ancestry Reveal" ceremony, which took place at the Nigeria House in the New York, underscored the profound historical connections between Nigeria and the African diaspora, evoking excitement and pride among attendees.

The 11 individuals were found to have Nigerian lineages, including Igbo, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Yoruba-Fulani, Hausa-Fulani, and Fulani-Kanuri.

Among those with newly discovered Nigerian heritage were Maleeka Harris, Shatara Corbett, Abel Watson, Darryl Rattray, Antonia Coleman-Brown, and Nicole Williams, along with Pablo Blanco, Estena Turner, William Conley, Keith Howard, and Gina Paige.

Additionally, OPEN TELEVISION Naija gathered that several others also traced their roots linked to eight African countries, including Cameroon, Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, and Niger Republic.

The Consulate-General of Nigeria in New York, Ambassador Abubakar Jidda, remarked that this discovery of Nigerian ancestry DNA did not only bridged cultural gaps but also celebrated the enduring bonds between Nigeria and the global African community.

“As you may be aware, Nigeria, with its rich tapestry of cultures and history, stands as a leader within the African continent. We have continued to celebrate this shared heritage,” said Jidda.

He also stated that "The Nigerian envoy highlighted the event's significance in revealing the rich, shared history between Nigeria and its diaspora, fostering a renewed sense of identity and belonging."

“Nigeria welcomes you,” he stated, adding that the Consulate offers various educational and cultural opportunities aimed at promoting cultural exchanges.

“We encourage you to explore these opportunities and deepen your knowledge and understanding of Nigerian and African heritage.”
