Amid Trump Threats, PDP Members Stage Protest at US Embassy in Abuja

By: Israel Adeleke

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that amid the ongoing controversies between the president of the United States of America, (USA), Donald Trump, and the government of Nigeria over the killing of christians in some part of the country, some members of the People's Democratic Party, (PDP), have staged a peaceful protest at the Embassy of the United States in Abuja.

OTN News further reports as gathered that the purpose of the protest according to some of the protesters, is to seek the “support of the international community to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and prevent the country from sliding toward a one-party system.”

OTN News observes that the demonstrators who carried placards with messages urging the international community and the Ministry of Justice to intervene and protect Nigeria's democracy and the Judiciary, submitted letters at the US Embassy, the European Union complex and the Ministry of Justice.

According to them, the rulling party is engaging in undue intimidation of opposition members. Alleging that they are drifting toward a one-party state.

OTN News recalls that the opposition party itself “has been embroiled in crisis for over two years now,” with its leaders “recently engaging in counter suspension of each other.”

The crisis escalated over the past weekend when the national chairman, Umar Damagum, along with some members of the National Working Committee (NWC), announced the suspension of the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and other principal officers.

Furthermore, in a “swift counter,” Samuel Anyanwu led a separate faction of the NWC to suspend Damagun, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and four other principal officers of the party, “deepening the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP.”

While the “Samuel Anyanwu-led acting national chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed resumed at the PDP national headquarters on Monday, Damagum and members of the National Working Committee loyal to him were conspicuously absent.”
